Chair: Sheryl Townsend
Our local Legal Redress Committee affirms that every aspect of civil rights is a legal redress concern. Our committee declares that legal redress is a cross-functional support body with the responsibility to monitor, inform and respond to issues of fairness, access, equal treatment and equal opportunities for all. This requires an intersectional roll (including but not limited to) with political action efforts, youth engagement, health advocacy, women’s initiatives, religious affairs, community outreach, educational initiatives, and NAACP membership initiatives.
A core component of our committee is to promote justice and equal points of access to public and regulated resources. Ensuring that information is available, accessible and usable strengthens fairness, supports stability for individuals and communities, and potentially reduces legal escalation.
The committee provides a structured platform and process to receive, document and review complaints of discrimination. Completion of our complaint form gives us an opportunity to review and investigate complaints in a formal matter as if warranted.
We do not provide legal advice nor legal representation.
The Legal Redress Committee shall:
(1) investigate all cases reported to it;
(2) supervise all litigation in which the Unit is interested; and
(3) keep the National Office and the Branch informed on the progress of every case.
(4) It shall not give general legal advice.
